Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BERA) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of the auditory nerve and brainstem in response to auditory stimuli.

Objective:

BERA is primarily used to evaluate the integrity and function of the auditory pathway, from the ear to the brainstem.

Procedure:

During the test, the patient is exposed to a series of clicks or tones through headphones. Electrodes are placed on the scalp to record the electrical responses generated by the auditory nerve and brainstem.

Clinical Applications:

Newborn Hearing Screening: BERA is used in newborns to assess hearing function and identify potential hearing issues early.

Diagnostic Testing: BERA is employed to diagnose various auditory disorders, including retro-cochlear lesions, auditory neuropathy, and brainstem abnormalities.

Neurological Monitoring: It can monitor neurological function during surgeries that may impact the auditory pathway.
